Vandana Shiva says plant many food plants rather than GM corn and soya

Stop riding the two trick pony!

There are only two commercially grown genetically modified food crops. Maize(corn) and Soya. Of these there are those that contain the Bt gene which constantly exudes a crystal toxin which kills insect larvae and a gene which makes the plan resistant to the companies brand of herbicide. The rise of insect resistance to Monsanto’s Bt Maize in South Afrrica and Bt Cotton in India clearly sends out warning signals of ecological disaster which are flying in the face of nature. Vandan Shiva speaking to One World. Net 16 March 2010, said: Faced with growing demand for food and increasingly unpredictable weather, many developing nations are debating whether to relax restrictions on the use of genetically modified crops. Planting a broader variety of crop strains-rather than a couple of GM varieties-should help protect the world food supply and insure it against emerging climate threats, including an expanding range of crop pests. Plenty of drought-and flood-resistant traditional crop varieties already exist and simply need to be brought back to market, supporters of traditional farming say. Keeping small farmers on their land is also key, she said, because small farmers are more productive per acre than big-scale growers, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation’s figures.
